About Hotel Phoenicia

5 star luxury in Malta’s historic Art Deco hotel

The Phoenicia is located in 7.5 acres of mature gardens and is within walking distance of the Island’s commercial and financial centres, commanding glorious views over the surrounding areas.  Its architectural beauty classes it as one of the sights of Malta along with such buildings rich in history as the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Masters Palace and those of the Auberges which still stand today. Its typical Maltese architecture is in striking contrast to, and at the same time in keeping with, the baroque and massive bastion walls that surround Valletta, built as safeguard against invaders.

The hotel is fortunate to house many examples of Chev Edward Caruana Dingli paintings and other Maltese artists.  As such the building itself is very much part of Maltese culture, and has inherent tourist appeal, attracting many leisure guests to stay at the hotel.

In November 1949, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed in Malta.  Guests are interested by the young royals’ time on the island and their connection with the Phoenicia.  The future queen and her husband visited the hotel on several occasions and came to dance in the Grand Ballroom. More recently, during HM Queen Elizabeth’s state visit to the island, the hotel was chosen as the venue for one of the official receptions hosted by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
