Jazz on the Fringe – an eve of jazz at Hotel Phoenicia
It was an inspiring performance for Jazz on the Fringe on a warm summer evening during mid-July (2014). The event was held within an apt setting at the Hotel Phoenicia’s sprawling gardens
, and the number of attendees at the 5 star hotel has well exceeded last year’s.
Several high-profile guests had very positive comments about this eve of jazz, as trio Sandro Zerafa (on the guitar), Yoni Zelnik (playing doublebass) and Karl Jannuska (on the drums) gave an incredible show. The evening was part of the Malta Jazz Festival, the annual event which helped raise the profile of jazz in Malta.
The Valletta hotel hosted a number of VIPs, including representatives from Arts Malta, V18, international journalists from Jazzwise, Jazz Journal and The Player International Magazine along with BBC Radio 3 and Jazz Line-up. Hotel guests and members of the public were present to enjoy this year’s Jazz on the Fringe.
The hotel’s general manager Mr. Charles Azzopardi enjoyed the evening with the guests and remarked that ‘as sponsor of culture, we are delighted to have been given the opportunity once again to be part of the Jazz on the Fringe and to have such a strong attendance in only our second year hosting this event. It’s been a joy seeing so many smiling faces. Sandro and the rest of the trio put on a marvellous show. Charles Gatt’s installation ‘Freedom Fighters’ also brought a new dimension to the event this year’.
