A Food Lover’s Guide to Valletta

Phoenix food 2

Valletta, located a stone’s throw away from The Phoenicia Malta, is the Maltese Capital City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only is it rich in culture, but it is also brimming with restaurants and bars.

Food lovers worldwide can understand the disappointment of an underwhelming meal, especially when on holiday and dining opportunities are limited. Hence, today’s blog lends a hand by recommending 6 delightful restaurants for you to enjoy during your trip to Malta.

1. Noni

We kick off the list with Michelin-starred restaurant Noni, led by siblings Jonathan and Ritienne Brincat. Noni offers a fine dining experience that is set in a warm and informal atmosphere, where great food meets exceptional service. Their food blends traditional dishes and techniques with the influences of our mercantile culture. Noni takes an imaginative approach to eating, but without too much fuss and frill.

2. Rubino

Rubino is another family run restaurant, known for its local and Mediterranean dishes. Having opened in 1906 as a Sicilian confectionery in Valletta, brothers Karl and Michael Diacono were presented with the possibility of taking over the outlet back in 2008. Since then, Rubino has grown to be one of the most popular restaurants in Valletta among people looking for quality local cuisine set in a casual environment.

3. Legligin

With tiled floors and brick arches, this is an intimate cellar wine bar, serving Maltese tapas-style food alongside a fine list of tipples. The name means ‘glug’ in Maltese, which is an apt choice of name for such premises. Dinner includes a fixed menu of up to nine small dishes. Despite the set-menu, any dietary requirements are accommodated with warm service and a smile.

4. AKI

A relatively new food outlet to Valletta, AKI is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and lounge bar situated in the heart of the city. The menu offers a vast range of options, from sushi and mini tacos to robata-style selections. The service is quick and attentive, whilst the décor is stylish and features an open kitchen. It is worth mentioning that tables are allocated slots, with groups of 2 having a total of 90 minutes. This arrangement might not be ideal for someone looking to make an evening of it, however it might be suitable for a quick bite whilst exploring the city.

5. No. 43

For all our health-conscious readers, we have the perfect place for you! No. 43 on Merchant’s Street is a café serving fresh sandwiches and an array of colourful and tasty salads. These are changed daily and prepared according to the chef’s inspiration of the day. Select your favourite salad or mix a few, the choice is yours. Sit down and enjoy your meal in the middle of the vibrant pedestrian street or take it home to properly savour all the lovely flavours.

6. Phoenix Restaurant

Located within the iconic Phoenicia Malta, Phoenix Restaurant is the ideal place for a meal, be it hearty breakfast, scrumptious lunch, or elegant dinner. Additionally, over the weekend the outlet offers a bottomless Sparkling Brunch, which has proven to be extremely popular among locals and tourists alike. Take a seat inside and admire the chic colonial décor and beautiful flower arrangements, or request a table on the spacious outdoor terrace, which affords spectacular panoramic views overlooking landscaped gardens, historic bastions and the Marsamxett harbour. Either way, expect exceptional service, a refined atmosphere, and an extraordinary menu.

The Benefits of Steam Rooms

deep nature malta

At The Phoenicia Malta’s Deep Nature Spa we have a number of facilities one can enjoy. These include a beautiful indoor pool, salt room, multi-jet showers, sauna as well as a steam room. One may wonder whether certain amenities truly offer any benefits to their users. This blog will focus on steam rooms and why they may, in fact, be deemed beneficial to us all.

Are steam rooms the same as saunas?
Sometimes steam rooms may be confused with saunas. Whilst steam rooms are considered similar to saunas, the main difference is in the type of heat that they provide. A sauna uses dry heat, usually from hot rocks or a closed stove (the latter system is used at Deep Nature Malta). Steam rooms are heated by a generator filled with boiling water. While a sauna may help relax and loosen your muscles, it won’t have the same health benefits of a steam room. The key to the steam room’s unique health benefits is the humidity.

Here are the main benefits of these rooms:

Improves circulation
Sitting in a steam room might significantly improve your cardiovascular health. A study of older individuals showed that moist heat improved circulation, especially in extremities. Improved circulation can lead to lowered blood pressure and a healthier heart. It can also promote healing of broken skin tissue.

Lowers blood pressure
Another study showed that in a steam room, some people’s bodies release hormones that change their heart rate. One of these hormones, called aldosterone, regulates your blood pressure. When aldosterone is released from sitting in the steam room, it can help lower high blood pressure. This is part of the reason that the steam room makes you feel relaxed.

Reduces stress
Being in the steam room can also decrease your body’s production of cortisol. Cortisol is the hormone that regulates the level of stress that you feel. When your cortisol levels drop, you feel more in control and relaxed. Spending a few minutes in a relaxed state not only improves your health, but also helps heal your mind and improve your focus.

Promotes skin health
Through environmental exposure, all sorts of toxins can become trapped underneath your skin. Steam rooms help solve that problem by using heat to open your pores. The warm condensation rinses away the dirt and dead skin that can lead to breakouts. As a result, you may have clearer and more even-toned skin.

Boosts the immune system
Different forms of hydrotherapy are known to boost immunity, and steam rooms are no exception. Exposing your body to warm water stimulates leukocytes, which are cells that fight infection. Sitting in a steam room when you’re fighting off a cold shouldn’t be your first line of defence, though, as there’s no proof that the steam can kill a brewing infection. But using steam rooms regularly will give your bloodstream an immunity boost that could lead to you getting sick less often.

Aids in workout recovery
The pain you feel after working out is called delayed onset muscles soreness (DOMS). Professional athletes have known for decades that heat therapy can help them recover from training workouts. Heat can penetrate deep into muscle tissue and help relieve DOMS. A recent study showed that moist heat works as effectively and more quickly than dry heat in muscle recovery. Keep this in mind after your work-out at The Phoenicia Malta’s fitness centre!

Clears congestion
Steam rooms create an environment that warms the mucous membrane and encourages deep breathing. As a result, using one can help break up congestion inside your sinuses and lungs.

Loosens stiff joints
Warming up before a workout is critical in avoiding injury. Using a steam room as part of your warm-up could help you reach maximum mobility during activities such as running, Pilates, and yoga. During a particular study, heat was applied to the knee joint before activity, and as a result, the joint was far more flexible and relaxed. The results showed that heat can help reduce injury before a workout. It was also found that women especially benefitted from heat therapy on the knee joint to prevent injury.

Burns calories
When you’re in the steam room or sauna, your heart rate increases. If you use a steam room after an aerobic workout, your heart rate is already elevated, and the steam room can prolong that elevation. When used correctly, experts note that saunas and steam rooms stimulate your body in ways that typical exercise does not.

With all these benefits, what are you waiting for? Book your next session at Deep Nature Malta via this link or ask our staff at The Phoenicia Malta to direct you towards the spa.

Gardens in and around Valletta

Relaxation Garden

Gardens in Valletta are quite limited, mainly owing to the fact that when the city was built in the 16th century, the authorities banned private gardens due to water shortage. This doesn’t mean that there are no green areas, however. This blog lists six gardens one can enjoy in and around Valletta.

1. Upper Barrakka Gardens

Possibly the most famous of them all, the Upper Barakka Gardens situated in one of Valletta’s top vantage points overlooking the Grand Harbour. From the main terrace one can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the most beautiful panoramic views in Malta. A unique view of the only natural harbour in the Mediterranean with the Three Cities as its backdrop. This terrace also overlooks the Saluting Battery, now a ceremonial platform where you can watch the military salute at noon and 4pm, daily.

2. Argotti Botanical Gardens

One of the most beautiful of Floriana’s public gardens, the recently refurbished Argotti Gardens are among the oldest Commonwealth gardens and serve as a wonderful green haven within their urban environment. The Argotti Gardens were laid out in the 18th century as a private garden belonging to Grand Master Pinto. Today Argotti Gardens has a dual personality: the public area contains rare trees, plants and flower beds. The many benches shaded by trees invite mainly Floriana residents to enjoy periods of relaxation. Sunday mornings serves as an invitation to others. They enjoy a pleasant walk through the ‘Biskuttin’ garden opposite The Phoenicia Malta, through the Mall Garden and then a leisurely walk into the Argotti.

3. Hastings Garden

Hastings Gardens is located on top of St. John’s Bastion and St. Michael’s Bastion, on the west side of the City Gate. The garden offers views of Floriana, Msida, Sliema, and Manoel Island. Hasting Gardens in Valletta is the home to a monument raised in honour of Lord Hastings who was a former British governor of Malta. He died at sea in 1827 and lies buried in the garden. Even though this garden is relatively small, it is still very attractive and charming, providing opportunities to take wonderful pictures.

4. Lower Barrakka Gardens

The Lower Barrakka gardens is situated at the lower end of Valletta on the bastions overlooking the entrance to the Grand Harbour. Located strategically so, as from there one can see the Harbour from another angle, from its mouth. The Lower Barrakka gardens is the place where you can sit down and relax looking at the splendid panoramic view. It is a nicely decorated garden with pathways and greenery.

5. Gnien Laparelli

Laparelli Garden, named after the Italian architect who designed Valletta in 1566, is a public garden located in the ditch below Valletta’s City Gate bastions. Inaugurated in February 2019, the garden was formerly a car park which was transformed as part of the regeneration of the area that also included the new City Gate and Parliament building, as well as the restored Triton Fountain and the surrounding square. Surrounded by the imposing Valletta fortifications on all sides, the Laparelli Garden features green landscaping, open spaces, benches and around 50 indigenous trees.

6. The Phoenicia Malta Gardens

A grand hotel like The Phoenicia Malta would not be complete without a magnificent garden; 7 acres of gardens, to be exact. Heading out of the hotel towards the famous Bastion Pool, one can admire a variety of trees, shrubs, and plants. Find one of the secluded benches and sitting areas, or the manicured Relaxation Garden. Enjoy a picnic or catch up on your reading, whilst enjoying the sounds of nature and birds chirping away. Alternatively, take a seat at the edge of the garden and enjoy breath-taking views overlooking Marsamxett Harbour and the Bastion Pool.

International Women’s Week – Let’s all get great at seeing beyond our bias!

Women_International_Week_EN

This week’s blog is written by our General Manager Robyn Pratt, who is passionate about supporting individuals and teams to be the best version of themselves no matter what their gender, culture, marital status, with children or not, or age is.

Our leadership team watched a video on the various biases that can be at play within the workplace and it can be surprising how many there are and how many times without really thinking these biases impact our decisions.

Something I have loved about being part of the hospitality industry for the past 45 years is the fact that I have had the opportunity to work beside and learn from people of all ages, nationality and cultures.  Having diversity within the workplace provides the opportunity to consider things from differing perspectives and almost always, when you consider everyone’s point of view, there will always be an idea or solution that comes together that some have never considered.

Imagine if everyone was the same! Imagine no opportunities to learn from others through their different perspectives!  Imagine not having the ability to try new ways of doing things!  Imagine not having the opportunity to develop and grow your own horizons through seeing things through others eyes!

What a boring world it would be.

We have 26 different nationalities working under The Phoenicia Malta roof and recently we held our end of year party (a little late due to Covid restrictions) and it was wonderful to feel the energy and see how people from so many countries come together as one family unit to celebrate each other.

Please do not consider bias as just being gender – all of us need to consider our thoughts carefully. And most importantly, consider what you think of yourself – what self-bias do you carry which limits your own potential.

Let’s all celebrate each other’s differences and use our varying perspectives to develop the best possible solutions to whatever issues we may be facing.

Right NOW in this world is the time to consider each other, let our biases go and work with each other to lift this world up for all of us to be the best we can possibly be.

Have a wonderful upcoming weekend and sending love and support to all who are suffering at present.
