Exhibition Showcase

A tactile exhibition in the Palm Court Lounge for the month of August of some of the most memorable prints throughout the years from Carla Grima Atelier. These selected pieces display the original painted print and it’s rendition onto fabric. Each weight and quality of silk absorbs ink differently. The beauty is seeing the outcome once the final fabric sample is complete.

We sometimes forget the natural reaction of fibers and the way they react to dyes, manufacturing, draping and simply touch. We therefore invite you to take a look and also to have a feel of the beauty of nature and it’s natural imperfections.

Carla Grima

Carla Grima specialises in the creation of prints, using an experimental practice of watercolours, photography and digital technology. She chooses to work with natural fabrics in the strong belief that there is unique beauty in natural imperfection. Her vision is threefold: exploration, the Mediterranean and the cosmic harmony of shapes.

She graduated in Fashion Innovation and Management from UCA Rochester, and spent a year in Paris, building her knowledge of textiles, fibres and cloth cutting through exposure to French couture techniques. After receiving an invitation to exhibit at London’s Graduate Fashion Week, she went on to work for Marc Jacobs and gained further experience working for London based brand’s; Aminaka Wilmont and Junky Styling, as well as collaborations with independent stylists and photographers. She then became a pattern cutter for Jonathan Saunders and a mentor for BA fashion design students at UCA.

Carla set up her own label in 2014 and maintains an international network of suppliers and collaborators. She has chosen to base her studio and her practice in Malta because there is nowhere else like it. An island of enchanting colour and light that serves as her primary inspiration.

Carla Grima Atelier is a Malta-based resortwear  studio with a single vision: to capture nature’s luxury. Inspired by organic silhouettes and the colours of the Mediterranean, natural fabrics are transformed into unique pieces to treasure for spring, summer, sea and sunset. Crafted through a combination of watercolour techniques, photography and textile printing, each garment is the collaboration of human hands, nature and machine. High-quality silk and flax fibres allow skin to breathe, creating minimal shapes for summer lovers. In keeping with the brand’s ethos and sustainable attitude, production is focused around the Mediterranean. Malta being their hub for design & creativity combined with skillful Italian production.
