Sustainability at The Phoenicia Malta

At The Phoenicia Malta, sustainability is not just a practice—it is a promise. As Malta’s grand dame of hospitality, we honour our heritage while actively working towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. Our commitment spans environmental care, community engagement, and cultural preservation, ensuring that our impact is both meaningful and lasting.

Eco-Conscious Hospitality

We empower our guests to make environmentally friendly choices during their stay, turning everyday decisions into opportunities for positive change.

Guests may opt out of daily changes to conserve water and energy.

From eco-friendly bathroom containers to unwrapped slippers and plastic-free laundry packaging.

Sustainable wooden key cards have replaced plastic alternatives.

Guests can check-in online a few days prior, or on a tablet upon arrival.

In-room systems such as televisions and sound systems are kept off prior to guest arrival.

All drinks are served without plastic straws or stirrers.

Community & Culture

We believe sustainability includes nurturing culture and community spirit.

We regularly support local charities and match funds raised by staff initiatives.

Every month, a local artist exhibits work in our Palm Court Lounge, offering guests a connection to Maltese creativity. The hotel charges a small commission on sales.

A private collection of works by Edward Caruana Dingli, one of Malta’s most celebrated artists, is proudly on display for anyone to see.

Local artist Alexia Coppini’s paintings are displayed in the hotel suites and some common areas. These paintings have a QR code to a dedicated page on the hotel website, with details and pricing.

Our property is home to numerous historical treasures, including a 16th-century wall—part of Valletta’s fortifications—within our Phoenicia Spa & Wellness. We are honoured to preserve and protect these cultural assets for future generations.

The historic fortifications form the boundary of our property, and we are actively committed to their ongoing preservation as part of Malta’s cultural patrimony. Guests can enjoy these fortifications when swimming at our iconic Bastion Pool.

We celebrate Malta’s national story through special events, such as our commemorative banquet marking the 60th anniversary of Independence Day. The evening featured a recreation of the original 1964 menu and a display of Independence-era crockery, in partnership with Heritage Malta.

Our menus favour locally sourced, in-season ingredients.

Each restaurant offers at least one vegan starter and main course.

All tea and coffee served are sustainably certified.

We monitor waste generation and adopt reduction strategies, including glass separation.

Batteries, waste oils, and CFC materials are disposed of according to environmental regulations.

Our procurement policy prioritises local and environmentally sustainable goods.
