The Phoenicia Malta Story
The Phoenicia Malta’s story begins in the 1930s when Lady Margaret Strickland initiated the construction of what would become Malta’s first 5-star hotel. Designed by Scottish architect William Binnie, The Phoenicia Malta embodies the spirit of the island with its local limestone and architectural elements reminiscent of Malta’s rich heritage.
Although works were interrupted by World War II, when the Royal Air Force requisitioned the unfinished building and it was heavily bombed during an air raid in 1942, The Phoenicia Malta finally opened its doors on November 3rd, 1947. Since then, it has stood as a beloved Maltese landmark.
Throughout its history, The Phoenicia Malta has undergone several refurbishments and changes in ownership. In 1966, Charles Forte purchased the hotel and added one of the island’s first swimming pools.
The Phoenicia Malta has meticulously maintained its original Art Deco features, including the intricate ceiling panelling, wrought-iron peacock gates, and ballroom doors. Guests can explore the hotel’s 7.5-acre gardens, which contain tunnels leading to an entire subterranean city beneath the capital city of Valletta (itself a UNESCO World Heritage site), providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Over the decades, The Phoenicia Malta has welcomed royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries from around the world. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip frequently visited and danced in the Grand Ballroom during their stay in Malta between 1949 and 1951, and the late Queen often spoke fondly of her memories at the hotel over the years. Actors Alec Guinness, Oliver Reed, and the cast of Gladiator I in 1999 and Gladiator II in 2023 are just a few of the luminaries who have graced our halls through the decades.
The hotel has also played a central role in key events in Malta’s modern history. It served as the main venue for the nation’s Independence celebrations in 1964 and hosted an official reception for Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit in 2005.
While preserving its historic charm, The Phoenicia Malta has been thoughtfully updated for the modern traveller. Following its most recent renovation – an extensive €15 million refurbishment completed in 2017 – the hotel continues to offer the same warm hospitality and unparalleled service that has made it a Mediterranean icon for over 75 years.
We now invite you to become part of The Phoenicia’s living history on your next visit to Malta.
